Hello all, I’m back with another 100 series. Last fall I wrote the MFAH 100, a personal project in honor of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s 100th anniversary. (Side note: the MFAH 100 will be coming out as a book later this year, hooray!)
For this new series, I’ll be writing 100 words on 100 songs in 100 days. This is a little scary for me, not only because I’m not limiting myself to a specific genre or time frame—“music” is a biggie—but mostly because, unlike visual art, writing about music is unknown territory for me.
But I love music, as I think most humans do, and confronting the unknown and the scary is one of the things that makes life worth living. So here I go. I’ll be posting starting February 2nd, Groundhog Day, through May 31, 2025, which is not a holiday, but which is my dad and stepmom’s 45th anniversary (happy anniversary, guys!).

I can’t wait. This reminds me of the saying attributed to Goethe:
“A person should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his or her life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”
Thanks for looking after our souls, Rainey! We need you.
Reading a written mixtape from the Impatient Reader sounds like a great way to spend 100 days!
