I have a collection of steel pennies with a very personal story connected with them. During World War II, many commodities were in short supply, and people had to live with ration coupons. Copper was especially needed for munitions and communication equipment. My father had graduated from NC State around 1938 with a BS degree in metallurgy. He had no trouble finding a lifetime job with the second-largest steel company in America, Bethlehem Steel; he was exempted from military service because of his knowledge of these essential materials. He was the one who suggested that pennies be made of steel instead of copper, and that was taken up and implemented by the US mint. You can still find 1943 and 1944 steel pennies for sale by rare coin shops. When I see a penny, (not so often these days), I pick it up and think of him.
