I had a Viewmaster as a child which was simply a stereoscope with a slot into which you put a carboard circle holding the pictures, rotating it with a lever on the side. It was a wonderful toy - I wwonder if they still make them? Most of us also had toy kaleidoscopes which used mirrors and prisms to break the incoming light into marveelous geometric patterns. I still have one I had made for an organization I was running at the time to encourage them to see new possibilities. I believe our fascination with enhancing the images we see is fueling the whole virtual reality explosion.

If you're especially clever you can accomplish the stereo effect without the viewer.
